14 Energy and Your Environment EXCLUSIVE It took artist Remi Rubel and 10 teenagers working full time for five weeks to build this 500-pound mosaic from 8,500 used bottle caps. A tremendous amount of energy is needed to take raw materials from the ground and turn them into plastic bags, hubcaps, motor oil, cement, aluminum cans, computer chips, and all the many products we use every day. Recycling eliminates energy use for extraction and drastically reduces energy use for processing. Reusing a material eliminates all but some energy use for shipping and handling.
